  • April 7, 2006 -- Haverhill Melvin Jones Fellow and Past President Kennth (Kenny) Parker, Jr. passed away. The Haverhill Lions Club expresses our deepest sympathy to Lion Parker's family and friends.

  • April 4, 2006 -- 2005-2006 District 33N Officers District Governor (DG) Louise J Wojtkiewicz and Cabinet Secretary-Treasurer (CST) Jane Witherow visited the Haverhill Lions Club. Topics discussed and details provided by DG Louise and CST Jane included:
    • April 30th Journey For Sight Walkathon.
    • May 5th through 7th Massachusetts State Convention.
    • May 30th 4th District Advisory.
    • June 3rd District Governor Testimonial.
    • June 12th Incoming Officers School.

  • March 7, 2006 -- The Haverhill Lions Club approved two eyeglass examinations and requests for local residents.


  • March 7, 2006 -- Daniel Hardy, Material Separation Coordinator for Covanta Energy Corporation in Haverhill, spoke to Club Members about Covanta’s Mercury Material Separation Program. Mr. Hardy explained to the Club about the State of Massachusetts’s Zero Mercury Strategy and how Covanta Haverhill has developed a "Community Outreach Program" to encourage the recycling of mercury containing products. He told the Club that mercury is toxic to the human nervous system, kidneys, liver, and immune system and how important that mercury products be recycled and not enters the waste stream Mr. Hardy asked Club Members to help share the message that:
    • Businesses as well as households need to recycle their fluorescent bulbs.
    • Mercury thermometers must be turned in at board of health office.
    • Tradesmen must save, not throw in the trash, any mercury thermostats.

  • February 28, 2005 -- Used Eyeglass Donations: PDG John Pettis, Jr. delivered approximately 245 pairs of used eyeglasses to the District 33N 3rd District Advisory. The eyeglasses will be forwarded to Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. At the Centers, the used eyeglasses will be cleaned, repaired and classified by prescription. The used eyeglasses are then distributed to those in need by Lion volunteers and other organizations hosting optical missions in developing countries.
    • The used eyeglasses were collected from the following Haverhill locations:
      • Farmer & Sons Funeral Home
      • Haverhill Citizens Center
      • Dr. Glenn Kimball's Main Street Optical


  • February 21, 2006 -- The Haverhill Lions Club approve a sponsorship donation for Haverhill High School Debate Team Students to attend the National High School Model United Nations (UN) Competition in New York City during the Spring 2006.

  • November 1, 2005 -- Tewksbury Lions Club Visits The Haverhill Lions Club. 12 Members and friends of the Tewksbury, Massachusetts Lions Club, led by Tewksbury President Aubrey "Monty" Gibson, visited our Club. Their visit was filled with great camaraderie and full of Lionism spirit!

  • HAVERHILL, MA, October 25, 2005 -- The Haverhill Lions Club's web site (www.HaverhillLionsClub.org) won first place in the 2005 Lions Clubs International Web Site Contest in the Lions Club category. The announcement came at the 88th Annual Lions Clubs International Convention in Hong Kong, June 27 through July 1, 2005.
    • Haverhill Lion Gary Albanese designed the Haverhill Lions Club's web site.
    • The announcement appeared in the October 2005 issue of THE LION Magazine.
    • Honorable Mentions Awards were given to: Hammonton Lions Club, District 16-C, New Jersey, USA; and Santa Fe Lions Club, District O-2, Argentina.

  • HAVERHILL, MA, October 25, 2005 -- The Haverhill City Council presented a Citation to Haverhill Lion Gary Albanese in recognition of winning the 2005 Lions Clubs International Web Site Contest for the design of the Haverhill Lions Club's web site: www.HaverhillLionsClub.org.
    • The presentation took place at the Haverhill City Council Meeting on October 25, 2005 in the Haverhill City Council Chambers, Haverhill City Hall, 4 Summer Street, Haverhill, Massachusetts 01830.

  • October 22, 2005 -- Haverhill Lions Linda Lynch and Jane Sweeney represented the Haverhill Lions Club in participating in the 15th Annual "Make A Difference Day" event in Haverhill. Haverhill Lions Lynch and Sweeney help deliver 700 chrysanthemum plants to all residents in Haverhill Nursing homes.
    • The event was a collaboration with the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, all local Service Club, city officials and volunteers.

  • October 3, 2005 -- The 89th Annual Lions Clubs International Convention will be held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. PID Chuck Kostro received a phone call announcing that the International Board of Directors had voted to accept the bid presented by the Massachusetts Multiple District 33 Council of Governors to host the 89th Annual Lions International Convention in Boston, Massachusetts June 30th through July 4th, 2006.

  • September 20, 2005 -- City of Haverhill, Massachusetts Mayor James A. Fiorentini visits the Haverhill Lions Club. Mayor Fiorentini spoke about the "state of the city" and his visions, as well as current plans, for Haverhill future that include:
    • Revitalization of downtown Haverhill by combining new business, shopping, entertainment and cultural ideas.
    • New business growth.
    • Increasing parking.
    • Increasing housing in the city's center.

  • September 6, 2005 -- Haverhill resident and Leader Dogs for the Blind recipient Jeanne L. Donovan along with her Leader Dog Shiloh visit the Haverhill Lions Club. Ms. Donovan thanked the Haverhill Lions Club for their help in obtaining her Leader Dog Shiloh from the Leader Dogs For The Blind in Rochester, Michigan.
