2006 --
The Haverhill Lions Club
approved two eyeglass examinations and requests for local residents.
|
- March 7,
2006 -- Daniel Hardy, Material
Separation Coordinator for Covanta Energy Corporation in Haverhill,
spoke to Club Members about Covantas Mercury Material Separation
Program. Mr. Hardy explained
to the Club about the State of Massachusettss Zero Mercury
Strategy and how Covanta Haverhill has developed a "Community
Outreach Program" to encourage the recycling of mercury
containing products. He told the Club that mercury is toxic to
the human nervous system, kidneys, liver, and immune system and
how important that mercury products be recycled and not enters
the waste stream Mr. Hardy asked Club Members to help share the
message that:
- Businesses as well as households
need to recycle their fluorescent bulbs.
- Mercury thermometers must be
turned in at board of health office.
- Tradesmen must save, not throw
in the trash, any mercury thermostats.

- February
28, 2005 -- Used Eyeglass
Donations: PDG John Pettis,
Jr. delivered approximately 245 pairs of used eyeglasses to the
District 33N 3rd District Advisory. The eyeglasses will be forwarded
to Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. At the Centers, the used
eyeglasses will be cleaned, repaired and classified by prescription.
The used eyeglasses are then distributed
to those in need by Lion volunteers and other organizations hosting
optical missions in developing countries.
- The used eyeglasses were collected
from the following Haverhill locations:
- Farmer & Sons Funeral Home
- Haverhill Citizens Center
- Dr. Glenn Kimball's Main Street

Lions Club approve a sponsorship donation for Haverhill High
School Debate Team Students to attend the National High School
Model United Nations (UN) Competition in New York City during
the Spring 2006.

Lynch and Jane Sweeney represented the Haverhill Lions Club in
participating in the 15th Annual "Make A Difference Day"
event in Haverhill. Haverhill
Lions Lynch and Sweeney help deliver 700 chrysanthemum plants
to all residents in Haverhill Nursing homes.

The 89th Annual Lions
Clubs International Convention will be held in Boston, Massachusetts,
USA. PID Chuck Kostro
received a phone call announcing that the International Board
of Directors had voted to accept the bid presented by the Massachusetts
Multiple District 33 Council of Governors to host the 89th Annual
Lions International Convention in Boston, Massachusetts June
30th through July 4th, 2006.

ideas.

- Increasing housing in the city's
