PAST PRESIDENTS

Honorable Salvatore Faraci, President 1944-1945
Celebrated Charter Night. Host to the Probation Office and Army Officer from the Veteran's Bureau. Met with another service club and entertained the college president. Host to the blind state worker.

Honorable Salvatore Faraci, President 1945-1946
Assisted a financial drive for the new Y.M.C.A. Building. Conducted a clothing collection. Entertained the superintendent of schools, professors, blind persons, and guests. Voted $25 to the Community Chest. Held a Gay Nineties Dance and Sports Night; proceeds for the Boy Scouts and blind work. Arranged to buy a motion picture projector for the Boy Scouts.

Albert Goodwin, President 1946-1947
Held a Ladies Night. Bought tickets for charity entertainment. Presented a radio to the blind. Voted $25 to the Community Chest. Held a Barn Dance. Fitted several persons with glasses. Voted to buy three Vision Testing machines.

Philip F. Brooks, President 1947-1948
Held Ladies Night with the Lawrence Lions Club. Donated $25 to the Community Chest. Entertained the City Safety Council. Sponsored advertisement in the newspaper regarding Child Health Week. Gave $25 toward the lighting of streets during Christmas. Contributed $185 for room and board of a crippled woman who is partially blind. Gave a Christmas Party for the blind. Held a Family Christmas Party. Gave a suit and clothing to a blind man. Sponsored a show and Auction of prizes; netted $900. Held a boxing match. Delivered an oxygen tent to the hospital. Purchased White Canes for the blind. Assisted the Girls Scouts with a clothing drive for children of Europe. Sponsored the Merrimac Lions Club.

George E. Hamel, President 1948-1949
Provided White Canes for several blind people. Donated $25 to the Cancer Fund. Held a Ladies Night. Presented a maternity table and an oxygen tent to the hospital. Donated $25 Savings Bond to the first baby born on the maternity table. Contributed $25 to the Community Chest Campaign. Purchased tickets at a Concert at a cost of $12 for the blind. Donated $50 for a Television Set to the Boys Club. Staged a Christmas Dinner Dance. Held a Christmas Party for the blind; provided luncheon and treats. Donated to the March of Dimes. Held a Pageant of Progress; gave $3,000 in prizes. Sponsored the Plaistow, New Hampshire Lions Club.

William R. Shepherd, President 1949-1950
Attended meetings and Charter Night of Plaistow, New Hampshire Lions Club and gave them gong and gavel. Purchased three oxygen tents for the hospital. Gave $300 to the County Polio Building Fund. Held a Ladies Night. Gave $25 to the Community Chest, and $50 to a handicapped business man. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and presented each with a White Cane and candy. Staged a Christmas Party. Held a Pageant of Progress. Donated $100 for camp equipment for the Boy Scouts attending the National Jamborees.

Daniel M. Thornton, President 1950-1951
Held a Ladies Night. Donated $25 to the Community Chest. Entertained two high school students weekly. Gave $100 to the Haverhill Industrial Commission to assist in the community's industrial needs and to influence business firms to settle in the community. Donated $50 to the high school band for uniforms. Provided $250 worth of material for construction of cubicles in the children's ward in the hospital and constructed a formulary room in the maternity ward at the cost of $350. Attended dedication of these projects in a group. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and gave gifts; host to the musical group of boys from Angel Guardian Home. Held a Christmas Party. Sponsored a parade of Progress exhibit; netted $4,500.

Norman T. Shepherd, President 1951-1952
Host two high school students weekly during the school months. Held a family banquet. Donated $25 to the Community Chest. Gave $1,000 to Y.M.C.A. to create boys game room in the new building. Gave $25 in gifts to hospitals veterans. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and gave gifts. Held a Ladies Night Christmas Party. Sponsored the Pageant of Progress. Donated $500 to the state committee for eye research.

John R. Morey, President 1952-1953
Provided transportation for a blind couple to Scituate, Mass. Assisted with the Community Chest drive and donated $60. Assisted with the little league baseball games. Contributed $15 to the Heritage of Freedom Organization. Entertained two high school students weekly. Fitted three persons with glasses. Paid a $40 doctor bill for an eye operation. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and presented them with gifts. Staged a Ladies Night and Christmas Party. Purchased a radio for a man in the sanitarium. Gave $25 to the Boys Haven Choir for Christmas. Assisted with blood bank visit. Held a pageant of progress and operated booths.

Samuel J. Minichiello, President 1953-1954
Voted $300 to Eye Research fund, $400 to Cerebral Palsy for equipment at Bon Secours Hospital, Methuen; $100 to Secino Eye, Inc. for Patron membership; $200 put aside for a party for the blind in the summer. Donated $100 to the Worcester Lions Club for tornado relief fund. Held a light bulb sale and netted $300 for the Mass. Eye Research Fund. Transported thirty blind persons to the concert. Assisted with the Community Chest Drive. Entertained the high school grade school children. Donated $400 to the Merrimack Valley Chapter of the United Cerebral Palsy Association for school chairs. Held a theater party and turkey dinner for blind persons. Sought orthopedic clinic for the community. Held a Christmas Party for 40 blind persons and their guides; gave gifts. Presented Patrolman of the Year award to the outstanding patrolman. Members donated to the Red Cross Blood Bank. Purchased 25 White Canes for distribution to blind persons. Held a pageant.

Lawrence B. Whiting, President 1954-1955
Provided transportation for two blind persons. Presented a movie projector to the Haverhill Boys Club. Provided white canes for two blind persons. Held a picnic for the blind. Conducted a light bulb sale. Fitted thirty-three persons with glasses. Donated $85 to the Community Chest. Held a Christmas Party for the Protestant Guild for the Blind and gave gifts and toys. Provided three eye examinations, also gave white canes to six more persons. Held a Valentine Party. Presented a movie projector and screen to the Girls Club. Conducted a pageant of progress.

Armand Racicot, President 1955-1956
Held a Ladies Night. Attended the major league baseball game. Held a clambake. Donated $30 to the Community Chest and $100 to flood relief. Donated two eye testing machines to the schools. Held a picnic for the blind. Sold light bulbs. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and gave gifts. Sponsored a Christmas carousel in the shopping area featuring Santa making the rounds and talking to the children. Fitted 22 persons with glasses. Donated $15 to the Haverhill High School Education Fund. Held a Valentine Party. Donated $25 to the high school girl's chorus. Held an auction and netted about $2,000.

Edwin R. Blackburn, President 1956-1957
Sponsored an outing for the blind. Donated $40 toward the Little League Banquet. Donated $25 to Hungarian relief. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and gave gifts. Donated $500 to YMCA building fund. Held a Ladies Night Valentine Party. Sponsored an auction with the cooperation of merchants and realized $510.

Raymond Hunkins, President 1957-1958
Appropriated $150 to the Boy Scouts to help build a camp house at the Boy Scout Camp. Spent $45 to buy eye glasses. Voted $100 to buy uniforms for the club, sponsored Little League team. Held a Ladies Night. Voted to pay for readers for a blind college student. Held an outing for the blind of the community. Donated $40 to the Little League banquet. Held a light bulb sale and realized about $1,000. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and gave gifts. Paid $600 to the sight fund.

Robert Trombley, President 1958-1959
Held a horse show and realized about $1,000. A cookout was held for members and their wives. Held a cookout for the blind. Held a Valentine Party and Ladies Night. Gave an eye research machine to the Concord St. School. Donated $225 to the local Boy Scouts to help provide a permanent camping sight for boy scout activities. Held a Christmas Party for the blind and dinner and each was given a $5 gift certificate and also a box of candy.

Rudolph Michaud, President 1959-1960
Held a cookout for the members and their wives. Held a sale of light bulbs. Held a Christmas Party for the blind giving each a gift certificate of $5 and a one pound box of candy with a dinner and musical entertainment. Paying for the replacement of an artificial eye for a young boy. Presented a typewriter to the Salvation Army. Held a Father, Son and Daughter Night. Donated $600 to the Boy Scouts to help enlarge their facilities. Mr. Drossos, a local garage owner, donated $900 to our charity fund; this money was raised from the inspection of automobiles (a Mass. law requirement). Paid for the treatment of a young boy to help save his remaining eye, one eye already lost.

R. Burke Bevelaqua, President 1960-1961
Held the annual cookout for the blind. Held the annual light bulb sale. Ladies Night was celebrated. Held the first eye screening project, for pre-school age children. Nineteen failed the test and were turned over to the doctors. Sponsoring the
Boston Patriots at the Haverhill Stadium making a profit of over $2600.

William D Miller, President 1961-1962
A light bulb sale was held with success. Held a talent show and a concert dance featuring AI Hibbler, the blind singer. The club bowling banquet was held at the Charles Steak House. Celebrated Ladies Night with a lobster bake. Purchased eyeglasses for three needy children.

James Waldron, President 1962-1963
Held a light bulb sale which was a huge success. Held a Christmas dinner for the blind. Donated $1,000 to the Lions Eye Research Fund. Held a cookout for the blind of the city. Held a Christmas Party for members. Held Ladies Night. Furnished eye examinations and glasses for 30 needy children. Donated to "Care." Held a Clyde Joy Musical Show which was very successful. The Lions and their ladies visited the Retina Foundation in Boston. Donated $150 to the American Little League, which we sponsor. Sponsored a boy to campership for the YMCA. Dr. Bill Sullivan won fifth prize at the Carling Brewery and the $25 was given to the Massachusetts Eye Research.

George J. Hewis, President 1963-1964
Presented a typewriter to a blind boy. Held a party for the blind. Sold light bulbs. The Lions and their Ladies attended a party with a midnight supper. Sponsored a play "Hocus Pocus" at Bradford Academy. Held a Ladies Night. Held the annual Christmas Party for the blind at the YMCA; turkey and gift certificates and a box of candy was given to all the blind of the city. Donated $1,000 to the Massachusetts Eye Research. Held a St. Patrick Day Party.

Peter Kelleher, President 1964-1965
Held a cookout for the blind. Held a cookout for members and their ladies. Sold light bulbs. Held the annual Christmas Party for the blind. Fifty persons were given turkey dinner and gifts, with another 75 gifts sent to the blind shut-ins. Three operations on children's eyes were made possible through the Haverhill Lions Club. Purchased 16 pairs of eye glasses for needy school children. Completed a very successful fundraising project which netted the Club better than $1,000. Contributed $25 to be used in the districts care program. Paid everything in the excess of $150 for a boy's eye operation.

John A. Busfield, President 1965-1966
Completed the bulb selling project, very successful. Held the annual picnic for the blind, entertained by an accordion player. Sponsored the King and His Court, a softball team. 2,000 bags of light bulbs sold. Held a Ladies Night. Donated $100 to "Care". Sponsored an exhibition All-Star basketball game. Lomazzo's Restaurant, meeting place, burned down. Transferred $2500 to the Permanent Project Fund. Sent the president and his wife to a clambake.

Thomas A. Sotera, President 1966-1967
Sponsored the King and His Court, a softball team. Held annual party for the Blind. Held annual light bulb sale. Held a get acquainted party for new members and their wives. Donated $100 to the Mass. Society for the Prevention of Blindness,$250 to the Boy Scouts Building Fund and $250 to the Haverhill Public Library Building Fund. Held a Ladies Night. Held annual Christmas Party for the Blind and presented gift certificates to all the blind. Held a past presidents' night. Sponsored a Peace Essay Contest. Donated $1500 to Mass. Eye Research Foundation. Sponsored a premier showing of Grand Prix and raised $1000. Donated $50 to a joint Service Club program for a needy family. Donated $400 for glasses to needy children.

Raymond V. Carbone, President 1967-1968
Held two club socials. Held an exhibition softball game as a fundraising project. Held outing for the blind. Held the annual light bulb sale. Donations made to the Haverhill Library and Boy Scout building funds and to the Mass. Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Held annual Sports Night. Held Ladies Night. Held annual Christmas Party for the Blind. Donated $1500 to Mass. Eye Research and $100 to the Lions Care Program. Held annual "Night at the Cinema."

Michael Mooradian, President 1968-1969
Held a Ladies' Night Barbecue, the Annual Cookout, a softball game beating the Haverhill Police Dept. in a Jimmy Fund Benefit. Started a bowling league. Sponsored the annual Light Bulb Sale. Held a Masquerade Party; participated in Annual Santa Parade; hosted the Protestant Guild for the Blind at a Christmas Party. Attended mid-winter conference in Salem, Mass. Held a 25th Anniversary Dinner-Dance. Held the Installation Party and Bowling Banquet.

Francis Cleary, Jr., President 1969-1970
Held the Annual Outing for the Blind, the Annual Light Bulb Sale, the Annual Christmas Party for the Blind; participated in Salvation Army Christmas Drive. Hosted the Lions Family Christmas Party; attended District 33N Mid-Winter Conference. Held a St. Patrick's Day Party. Hosted Glaucoma Screening Clinic. Participated in Haverhill's Centennial Celebration and Parade; held Annual Installation. Paid for special glasses for glaucoma victim. Allocated $50.00 each for three Little Leagues.

Arthur Lynch, President 1970-1971
Held Annual Bowling Banquet; held Social at Ted Murphy's Garrison Golf Course. Held Annual Cookout for the Blind. Held Annual Light Bulb Sale. Staged Ladies Night at Sweeney's Gay Nineties. Hosted Wine-Tasting Party. Had a combination Thanksgiving-Christmas Party for the Blind. Had a visit by District Gov. Charles Cerratani. Held Annual Children's Christmas Party. Pledged $3,000 to Eye Research, $125 to "Care" Program; $50.00 to Mass. Society Prevention of Blindness, Color TV for children's ward of Hale Hospital. Runner-up for the "Best Club" in District.

Ronald Sarofian, President 1971-1972
Held Annual Christmas Party, Ladies Christmas Social, Annual Light Bulb Sale. Donated $50.00 to V.F.W. for Parade; appropriated $1,176.43 to Eye Research; $50 to Mass. Association for Blind; $100 to Mass. Society for Prevention of Blindness; $100 to Haverhill Gazette Santa Fund; $500 to Haverhill Youth Hockey Assoc. Manned Salvation Army Kettle.

John S. Gollan, President 1972-1973
Voted to purchase a movie camera for $300 for use of Photography Education Program sponsored by the Haverhill Public Library. Held Annual Light Bulb sale grossing $3,060.00. Held a Las Vegas Night making a profit of $2400. Donated $25 to First Church of Christ to feed the needy on Christmas Day. Donated $100 to Gazette Santa Fund. Held Installation Night at the Haverhill Country Club. Sent two Boy Scouts to Lone Tree; gave a check to YMCA for camperships. Presented donation to Riverside-Bradford Little League. Held Annual Party for the Blind.

John J. Ryan, III, President 1973-1974
Held Glaucoma Clinic, Initiation Night, Outing for the Blind, Country & Western Night, Annual Golf Classic, Past President's Night, Ladies Christmas Party, Las Vegas Night and held Annual Light Bulb Sale. Donated $2,000 to Eye Research Fund, donated to Youth Hockey League, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girls' Softball League; sponsored Medical Alert Program; donated to proposed Cultural Arts Center; "Roasted" the King; sponsored Joint Service Club meeting with Bill Loeb, guest speaker; Summer outing at Pawtuckaway lake; sponsored Gerald Boucher, Vietnam veteran and Honorary Lion, in Blind Bowler'Tourney.

Morris Piccolo, President 1974-1975
Held an Italian Night; sponsored summer and Christmas Parties for the Blind; held 30th Anniversary Dinner; held Mid East Nite Club Social; Established Junior Lions Program; Club Trip to Boston Eye and Ear Infirmary (Retina Foundation); Sponsored Country & Western Night; Constructed Lions' Float for Santa Parade; Donated movie projector for drug abuse program; Donated $2,000 to Eye Research, $100 to CARE, $50 to Gazette Santa. Sponsored team in girls' Softball league; Sponsored Haverhill Youth Hockey; Camperships; Contributed to YMCA Building Fund; Sponsored youth in Lions Youth Exchange Program; Conducted Annual Light Bulb Sale.

Dr. Phillip Minichiello, President 1975-1976
Bi-Centennial Year; Lino Lazazzera made Life Member; regular meetings change from noon to evening after two-month trial; Lions Club Bi-Centennial Committee manned booth at Haverhill Stadium, raffled a T.V.; held Light Bulb Sale; held Golf Night and cookout; held Country Western Night; held 120 Club; participated in Santa Parade, held Summer Outing for the Blind; held Christmas Party for the Blind, Christmas Party for Children of Members and Christmas Party for Members and Wives; donated $1200 to Eye Research and $100 to CARE, donated $100 to Girls Softball League and $100 to Riverside Bradford Little League.

Leo Boucher, President 1976-1977
I.A.F.F. - Held First Annual Canoe Race, held Dinner of the Month Raffle, held Italian Night, Country Western Night, Golf Night and cookout; Conducted Light Bulb Sale, held Father Son Night and Father-Daughter Night, participated in Santa Parade; held Glaucoma Clinic, Summer Outing for the Blind, Christmas Party for the Blind, Christmas Party for Members' Children, Christmas Party for Members and Wives; held Lion World Service Day; Members manned Salvation Army Christmas Kettles; donated $126 to Girls Club, $100 to Boys Club, $100 to YWCA, $125 to CARE and $1200 to Eye Research.

William Faraci, President 1977-1978
Held Canoe Race, golf Night, Halloween Party, Christmas Parties for club and kids, Father-Son and Father-Daughter Nights, and Installation. Started Italian Night. Updated Permanent Fund Resolution to allow higher yield investment. Gave twelve different camperships. Met annual district donation to Eye Research, L.I.F. and Care. Negotiated use of Winnekenni Castle for use as Santa's Castle and provided $1,000.00 seed money for project. Held party for the Blind and Light Bulb Sale.

Jim Baker, President 1978-1979
Held a Night at Club Casino featuring the Platters, Golf Night, Canoe Race, and Italian Night. In addition held the first Santa's Castle as our major fund raiser which attracted approximately 18,000 people. Held our annual father-son/father-daughter night as well as an inflation of new members. Donated $1500 to eye research, $400 to the Octagon Fund $100 to Care, and $100 campership funds to the Salvation Army, Haverhill Girls' Club YWCA and the Boy Scouts.

Paul F. Bresnahan, Jr., President 1979-1980
Held a canoe race, donated a brailler for a blind student, gave camperships to scouts, Boy's Club and Salvation Army. Held our 2nd Santa's castle and Santa's parade. The year ended with the Gala 35th anniversary party.

Paul Sanborn, Jr., President 1980-1981
Held a father-daughter night, gave camperships. Donations made to scouts YMCA, YWCA and held a ladies night.

Thomas A. Sotera, President 1981-1982
Held a Las Vegas Night which netted $4,600. Donated a visual aid machine to Northern Essex Community College. Gave camperships Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Little League. Held a wine tasting party at the Grotto.

John H. Pettis, Jr., President 1982-1983
Met all International and District donations. Bought eyeglasses for needy students and adults. Gave 12 camperships. Held an animal day and a Las Vegas night. Held the 120 Club fundraiser. Had two Ladies Nights, a Family Night, a Wine Tasting Party and brought in four new members.

Francis J. Perry, President 1983-1984
From Las Vegas night, to the 'Amazing Kreskin', Animal days, and Ladies Nights, the membership worked and raised funds to support Eye Research, Octagon Fund, CARE, Camperships, Little League, individual needs of the visually handicapped and gifts to NECCO comprised the many activities and good works of the young and old of the Haverhill Lions.
